The 30 best things about November

by eliz on November 10, 2008

1. Finally seeing autumn arrive in SC.
2. Thanksgiving, the greatest holiday ever.
3. Putting the Halloween decorations away so you can start …
4. Preparing for Thanksgiving (by making lists!) – the menu, the guests, the groceries.
4a. The veggies and sides (mashed potatoes vs. mac and cheese; roasted Brussels sprouts; acorn squash; stuffing with sausage and apples).
4b. The pies (apple, apple and cranberry with crumb topping, mincemeat, pumpkin with cinnamon whipped cream).
5. The free Thanksgiving recipe book from Williams Sonoma.
6. The last farmers’ market Saturday.
7. The return of Starbucks’ holiday lattes.
8. Wearing wool scarves inside, outside, while reading in bed.
9. Putting mittens on Tink on cold mornings.
10. The smell of fallen leaves.
11. The smell of a wood fire from a neighbor’s house.
12. S’mores made in the fire pit and the excitement and terror of Tink + sharp metal sticks + fire.
13. Tights and boots.
14. Striped SmartWool socks.
15. Buying extra bags of cranberries for the freezer.
16. Corduroy jumpers on little girls.
17. The first big snowstorm in Western New York.
18. Planning which bars we’d hit the night before Thanksgiving.
19. The World’s Largest Disco.
20. Butternut squash soup.
21. Hot cider.
22. Our wedding anniversary.
23. The Turkey Trot (watching, not running).
24. Pie-making on Wednesday night with the tiny leaf cookie cutters.
25. The annual watching of “Hannah and Her Sisters.” (Notice the pumpkin-orange walls in Mia Farrow’s dining room.)

26. Setting the table with the good china.
27. Taking the Friday after Thanksgiving off to decorate, not shop.
28. “November Rain.” (I want C to wear a cape at my funeral.)
29. Impromptu weekend trips to the beach, where it’s windy and quiet.
30. Taking a moment to enjoy the holidays before the madness of December starts.

I LOVE your china. Lenox Autumn, right? And thank you for reminding me of Hannah and Her Sisters. I love that movie, and it really is autumnal. Great list!

@becky – Yes, it’s Lenox’s Autumn. I got it from my great-grand-aunt when I was 12. A whole story right there.
