Product shout-out

by eliz on November 11, 2008

With all this walking I’ve been doing out in brisk temperatures (why, yes, I am still at it), my lips were becoming flaky and stingy and throbby. Good thing I filled everyone’s stockings with Kiss My Face’s Lip Action lip balm last year.

Since every American female 12 years of age and older is legally required to purchase no fewer than two tubes of lip balm a year, and I turned 12 the year Diana Spencer and Prince Charles married (as did Luke and Laura), the hostages were released in Tehran, MTV was launched, Sandra Day O’Connor became first woman nominated and confirmed for the U.S. Supreme Court, “Ordinary People” won the best picture Oscar, the pope and Reagan were shot, Simon and Garfunkel gave that free concert in Central Park, Mark David Chapman was sentenced for murdering John Lennon, Anwar Sadat was assassinated, the Rolling Stones kicked off their “Tattoo You” tour, both Paris Hilton and Metallica were born, and Andreas Papandreou became prime minister of Greece … well, let’s just say I have tried a lot of brands of lip balm in my day.

But I’ve never found one I liked, that had the right combo of pleasant scent but non-fake taste, SPF and actual healing properties – and no nasty ingredients – until I found the Lip Action at Whole Foods last holiday season.

I bought my first few tubes of Lip Action because $1 of each $3.49 tube was going to the Alliance for Climate Protection (Al Gore’s joint). Softening my kisser while helping save the polar bears? Sign me up! The rest of the tubes I bought were just the result of my hording instincts.

It’s smooth but not sticky, it smells great, has SPF 15 and it works. All without parabens (the synthetic preservatives linked to breast cancer), camphor or petrolatum (which perversely further dries out chapped lips and leads to the maddeningly futile cycle of applying and reapplying to no avail). The Eco-Cocoa with Mandarin variety is like something they’d serve at Starbucks.

Lip Action seems to be in limited supply on most sites, but the Glacial Mint (minty!), Mango Melt and Coconut Crisis flavahs are on KMF’s Web store. I hate to get y’all all jazzed over a product that might be discontinued, so I’d get it while the gettin’s good.

I tell you what. I’m happy to go to Whole Foods and check on it for you. And, selfless blogger that I am, I’ll be happy to let you know if WF is also bringing back its pannettone and salted caramels. ‘Cause I’m like that.
