Friday Quickies, Vol. 3: Better-Late-Than-Never Edition

by eliz on February 20, 2009

Like Jen, only with more whining, I give you quickies.

1. After a brutally long weekend for my husband, we had a belated Valentine’s Day celebration Monday. C brought home four lobster tails, four very small lobster tails that weren’t really enough for three people for dinner, so I made twice-baked potatoes and a huge salad and had leftover rice and beans waiting to be nuked if we needed it. After Tink helped Daddy brush them with butter, turn them on the grill, and then help herself to most of them, we needed those rice and beans after all.

p1070392p1070396Probably not a great idea to get a 3-year-old accustomed to lobster. She’s been asking when we’re having it again.

Of course there was a gift for Daddy. Tink and I were extra thoughtful and sampled plenty of them to make sure they were tasty.

2. Because I’m on a continual Bridget Jones-like quest to improve myself, I’m contemplating what to give up for Lent. I feel like one actual, tangible thing to give up and one mental or habit-centered change to make would be a nice balance. Sugar keeps topping my list of physical things to give up. (The exhortation to eliminate sugar is everywhere lately. It’s enemy No. 1 on this Spent program, which intrigues, but all those supplements they’re selling make it look a bit shady.) What about the other? Should I purpose to get out of bed earlier every day? (”Purpose” as a verb – how much do we hate it?) What about committing to wearing makeup every day? Perhaps making a quasi-shallow change would help me treat myself better, which will lead to healthier, more significant changes. I’ll report back when I decide.

3. On the menu for Oscar-watching this Sunday: Spinach-bacon-chevre pizza and big chocolate souffle. For years I watched the Oscars with a coterie of gay guys, and I always made a key lime pie. Maybe we need souffle and key lime pie. Photos and recipes to come.

4. Like Paula Deen waving her butter-laden creations under the nose of someone on a diet, a shoe store I used to frequent still sends me e-mails about the fabulous things Jimmy, Manolo, Gucci and Lanvin have made specially for my feet. When I moved to SC, I looked forward to being able to wear open-toe shoes more than six weeks of the year, so I particularly love spring and summer shoe season. With the exception of last year’s gladiator sandal trend, that is. In my in box this week, instead of pretty yet out of reach things to gaze at were these:

Just as well. Ugly shoes take the sting out of not being able to shop.

5. I took a swipe at Suze Orman and her out-of-touch pseudo-psychological financial babble the other day, and while I’d love to do it again, someone has beat me to it. Writing on Open Salon, Lisa Kern gives ol’ Suz a taste of what ordinary Americans are dealing with these days. If I could add: Hey, girlfriend? I didn’t get myself into this situation by filling my closet with gladiator sandals. The economy crapped out, love bug. While you’d probably view our business’ fight for its life as an opportunity for learning and female empowerment, we’re going to grit our teeth, get through it the best we can and scoff at the idea that this is a punishment for indulging in all those spendy lattes and magazine subscriptions back when we received regular paychecks. Mmkay?

6. Yeah, about the business. We’re forging ahead. The partners are working as one, my husband has found some fight down deep inside, and we’re pulling out what tricks we have left in our bag. One trick is an actual Web site we’re thrilled to finally launch. It’s lean and mean. It reflect us beautifully. Thanks to Hunter and Elizabeth. And if you find yourself in upstate SC, by all means, stop in. All readers of my blog get a free cup of coffee.

. Here’s a surprising bit of news. As it turns out, you don’t save any calories cooking at home. You’re better off eating out (local only, please! no chains) – in fact, you’ll consume fewer calories. This couldn’t come at a better time.

E-Barr, I am getting such a kick out of your blog especially now that I have figured out it is you. I am proud that we once collaborated. (”No cards, no ‘Friends.’” That line is immortal.) Thanks for the link to that priest’s Pelosi blog. I brazenly commented on it. Do you know that priest? He sounds like a riot.
