10 Previously Unpublished Politicians’ Nights Out (aka PNO)

by eliz on June 1, 2009

Barack and Michelle Obama aren’t the only world leaders who have stolen away for a date night. Some other politicians’ lesser-known outings:

1. The time Tony and Cherie Blair drove to Scotland, scaled stone walls, sneaked into Balmoral while Elizabeth and Philip were out fly fishing and had sex in the queen’s bedchamber while the corgis watched. Her majesty suspected something most unusual had occurred when she found lemon curd on the sheets.

2. Eliot Spitzer frequented a weekly S&M club in Brooklyn. Wouldn’t you loved to have seen his face the night he ran into Lynn Cheney?

3. Bill Clinton tried to make the whole l’affair Lewinsky up to Hillary by having the Secret Service arrange a candlelight picnic after hours in the library at Yale Law School, where they met. Unfortunately, Hillary wasn’t amused by his jocular request to engage in some “oral arguments” and ended up destroying decades worth of legal scholarship when the candle she threw ignited the stacks in the rare books section.

4. Laura Bush declared an end to secret date nights when W. was thrown from the only mechanical bull in D.C. for the third time. Imagine how badly he could have been hurt had he been sober.

5. When the stresses and strains of running an Islamic nation in the midst of the powder keg that is the Middle East gets to them, King Abdullah and Queen Rania of Jordan wink at each other and whisper, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.”

6. Richard and Pat Nixon made a habit of spoiling their dinner with a 5 o’clock hot fudge sundae eaten in the vice presidential limo. Dick liked to watch the car hops as they skated away.

7. Vladimir Putin plays on a Thursday night hockey league under an assumed name and even subbed as left wing on the Russian Olympic team in 2006, scoring two goals against Finland.

8. JFK and Jackie – wild martini-fueled nights spent with their Rat Pack chums? Catching Bobby Vinton at the Tropicana with their Chicago mob associates? Nope. Jack and Jackie went bowling. Jackie wore a satin jacket custom-made by Oleg Cassini.

9. After an elegant meal at Applebee’s while on the campaign trail, Sarah and Todd Palin were asked to leave a Walmart when they started playing William Tell with the bows and arrows in the hunting department.

10. Nicholas and Carla Bruni Sarkozy: Eurodisney.

LOL@Oleg Cassini. This list is awesome. I have mixed feelings about the date night: on the one hand, I love that they did it. On the other hand, I’m wondering how it was paid for. Then again, Bush was constantly going “on vacation” so what the hell am I talking about costs for here?

Yeah, I’m surprised that first link (the Huff Post blogger criticizing the date night) didn’t mention the fact that Bush had spent more days away from the WH than any pres in history. (Until 9/11, that is.) I think it’s cool that the Obamas have such style that dinner at a serious foodie boite and theater was their choice. Well, Michelle Obama’s choice. Theater is never the date of choice for a straight man.
