Is Brooke Shields worried about the prospects of her TV show “Lipstick Jungle” or is she saving up in advance of a divorce filing? Because every time I turn on the TV, there she is hawking a product, mostly from the health and beauty aisle.
Shields is currently pitchperson for no fewer than four products: Colgate Total; the Volkswagen Routan; Latisse, an eyelash-growth treatment from the makers of Juvederm; and Coppertone’s New NutraShield Dual Defense sunscreen. All decent products, it would seem, with upmarket cachet. All four appear to be a good fit between product and spokesperson, unlike when Catherine Zeta-Jones first started doing (and continues to do) commercials for T-Mobile. (Who knows – maybe Michael Douglas keeps Cathy ZJ on a strict allowance.)
The way Shields is hungrily collecting endorsements makes me somewhat concerned for her. She’s either in need of a steady stream of easy cash (hey, who isn’t?) or is trying to beat the clock. Shields is a gorgeous woman who happens to be 44. She has aged extraordinarily well but, even so, there are only so many more years she can be the face of beauty products. Could be that she’s simply trying to wring out whatever she can monetarily from her beautiful meal ticket while it’s still an option.
She’s made great choices – there isn’t an embarrassing product in her stable of moneymakers. Toothpaste? Most definitely! Proper oral hygiene should be a priority of everyone. As well as protecting skin from sun damage. (Do you think Coppertone wanted Brooke because “shield” is in the name of their product or is it just a coincidence?)
Her mockumentary-style commercials for the Volkswagen Routan were really funny and showed off her comedic chops. Why isn’t her agent looking for a good sitcom for her rather than adverts for trendy German SUVs? I know – I say that when I barely watched any episodes of “Suddenly Susan,” but maybe if she got in with a better group of writers? Can’t her husband help her on this front? There’s more street cred and career longevity to be found in an edgy comedy than there is playing a cosmo-swilling Candace Bushnell clone. Julia Louis-Dreyfus has a comeback on her hands in her 40s, and she sure didn’t do it by borrowing from Carrie Bradshaw’s cougarlicious wardrobe.
The only of Shields’ product that gives me pause is the Latisse, a prescription glaucoma medication now FDA-approved as a cosmetic treatment for eyelashes. What’s it doing to do to her credibility when this stuff turns out to cause night blindness, crow’s feet and other horrid side effects?
Silly me. It’s FDA-approved. What could go wrong? I’m sure Brooke knows what she’s doing. And if she continues to land these choice endorsements, maybe she’ll be able to buy more bras.

I got this in my Google Reader, and I was all set to say, “Hey, good for her. She’s a smart business woman who recognizes that her marketability will change very soon, and she’s making hay while the sun shines.”
But then I scrolled down and saw her bubbie and got all distracted and lost my train of thought…because that shirt does not say, “Smart businesswoman.” Unless she’s trying to show us that after two kids, her bubbies are not as saggy as ours, in which case, she can pretty much bite me.
I watched that Lipstick Jungle show. Twice. It sucked very, very hard.

@Kerry – Yeah, are them some good-looking 44-year-old bubbies or what?

I got distracted by the bubbie, too. What does this say about me? Not sure.
She’s not broke. She lives in like the richest of the richest areas to live in LA. But I would guess that she’s worried she won’t be able to get jobs as she ages, yes. Also, apparently commercials are very well-paid gigs for not much work. In America, we think of a celebrity in a commercial as a sign of a weakening career, but the truth is that in Japan, A-listers are currently running in ads for things like jeans and alcohol. It might be that trends are changing a little bit here, too.

I think that Ms. Shields looks Fantastic!
I went out and bought Bob the Butler so that I can see her on DVD.
Ms. Shields should be the 21st century Wonder Woman Literally!
Ms. Shields looks to be in her twenties.
I hope all is well with her family.
Please keep making comedies because you are great at it!
How can you surpass beauty such as hers?
